Maggie Sauer - Associate Executive Director
Maggie Sauer joined the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation from Duke University Medical Center, Community and Family Medicine’s Division of Community Health. As director of Health Promotion/Disease Prevention she managed 36 community-based projects located across North Carolina targeting uninsured and/or underserved individuals to prevent chronic disease and obesity. Maggie was part of the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Department of Medicine in the Division of Allied Health Sciences for 10 years. She participated in and coordinated medical teams at Boston Children’s Hospital and the University of North Carolina. Maggie received her Masters of Science in speech/language pathology from Colorado State University and her master’s in health administration from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She continues on the faculty of Duke University as a consulting associate for the Department of Community and Family Medicine.

Joe LaBella - Director
Joe LaBella is the Director of Programs with the NCMS Foundation. Prior to this role at the Foundation, Joe was the practice administrator for Cancer Centers of North Carolina in Raleigh, NC and preceding that, the practice manager of New York Hematology Oncology Associates in Albany, NY. Joe received his B.A. in Political Science from LeMoyne College and has a Master’s degree in Health Services Administration from Sage Graduate School.

John Mitterling - Development Consultant
John is currently Development Consultant for the North Carolina Medical Society Foundation, leading the Foundation’s development efforts statewide to raise funds for its programs, most of which focus on increasing access to quality health care by supporting physicians who practice in underserved areas of North Carolina. Immediately prior to coming to the Foundation, he led development efforts for the YMCA of the Triangle and the North Carolina Symphony. For almost a decade before that, he worked in health care, leading development efforts for the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, the North Carolina Affiliate of the American Heart Association, and the American Academy of Family Physicians. It was in these positions that he developed a passion for working to help the underserved.

Helen Colevins - Assistant Director
Helen Colevins started working for the Foundation in April of 2006, bringing her interest in new technologies and her past library experience to the table to help expand online practice management resources for NCMS members and Community Practitioner Program participants. With educational degrees matching her many interests, Helen holds a BA in ceramics, a Master of Fine Arts in ceramics, as well as a Masters of Library Science and a Masters of Education in Instructional Technology.
