The Community Practitioner Program

To better care for the rural, underserved, and uninsured populations within the state, the NC Medical Society Foundation initiated the Community Practitioner Program utilizing the funds from a one-time grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust. The Program provides financial assistance to physicians, physician assistants, and family nurse practitioners in return for service in an underserved community. By offering partial relief for their tremendous educational debts, practice management assistance, and other incentives, the program's support encourages health care professionals to serve in the areas of North Carolina that need them the most. The Community Practitioner Program is the only North Carolina-based funding source that assists physicians and mid-level practitioners in all areas of the state. Featured Partner
The Community Practitioner Program is fortunate to receive support from many of our state's most prominent foundations. Our collaboration with foundations not only provides essential financial support, but also gives us an opportunity to expand our vision about what CPP is and can become. Our work with foundations challenges us to carefully plan for our future, both programmatically and financially, remain connected with other non-profits doing similar work, consider best practices in our field and thoughtfully evaluate our successes and learn from our disappointments. Visit this section often to learn more about these valuable partners.

The Golden LEAF Foundation, a nonprofit corporation, was created in 1999 to receive one-half of the funds coming to North Carolina from the master settlement agreement with cigarette manufacturers. In turn, the Foundation is helping North Carolinians make the transition from a tobacco-dependent economy through grants and investments that will positively affect the long-term economic advancement of the state. It gives priority in its grantmaking to tobacco-dependent and economically distressed counties. www.goldenleaf.org. The Golden LEAF grant of $250,000 to the NCMS Foundation is to support the Community Practitioner Program's efforts to expand access to health care and create employment and economic development opportunities in rural, economically distressed and tobacco-dependent communities. Golden LEAF supports the following Community Practitioner Program physicians who practice in tobacco-dependent and economically distressed counties:

Netasha McLawhorn, MD, Vance County

Emily Melton, MD, Transylvania County

Larry Lawrence, MD, Carteret County

Capital Campaign for the Community Practitioner Program

The North Carolina Medical Society Foundation would like to thank those individuals and organizations who have donated to the Capital Campaign for the Community Practitioner Program (CPP). Launched in 2006, the campaign has raised more than $16.1 million toward a goal of $20 million to be raised over five years. These funds will help secure the future of the CPP, which increases access to health care by providing financial assistance to physicians, physician assistants, and family nurse practitioners in return for service in underserved communities. The Goals
To ensure that physicians, physician assistants, and family nurse practitioners are located in North Carolina's rural and underserved communities.
To work with local communities to improve the health care infrastructure of needy communities.
To work to lower the cost of health care while improving quality.
The Impact
The Program has assisted over 300 doctors, health professionals, and practices across North Carolina.
64% of practitioners assisted remain in their communities long after their five-year commitment has ended.
73% continue to practice in rural or economically distressed communities.
85% of the more than 200 practitioners assisted through the Program remain in practice in North Carolina.
Since the Program's inception, patients in more than 128 communities in 76 North Carolina counties have benefited from an estimated $226 million in free or reduced care provided by these practitioners.
