"We have a staggering amount of debt. It's manageable now -- the Community Practitioner Program has definitely helped," said Colin Goggin, MD, of the Swain Medical Center, whose wife Linda S. VanDeusen, MD, is also part of the Community Practitioner Program.

Drs. VanDeusen and Goggin already have their sights on ways to further serve Swain County.

"We dream of starting a free clinic because there's such a need," said Dr. VanDeusen. "If that was available, hopefully people wouldn't put off care."

"There's a free clinic in Sylva through the health department. We are hooked up with them and their infrastructure," said Dr. Goggin. "There's still a lot of groundwork to cover, but it's definitely doable. It just needs a lot of energy."
